Memoirs of Sydney N. Warren A.M.I.E.E

Completed early 1947

Transcribed by S J Maloney, his great, great grandson , July 1999

Preface: His own obituary

'It is surely unusual for a person to write his own obituary, but that is just what Mr. Sydney Warren of Middlesbrough did. When a grandson came into the office yesterday to tell us of the death of this pioneer of the electrical contracting business in the North-east, he brought with him a beautifully written document.

It detailed the whole of Mr. Warren's life from his birth in Smyrna to his long business career in England , where he came to be apprenticed to his trade as an electrical manufacturing engineer. All his associations with various professional bodies and other organisations were carefully detailed, and they were set down in almost copperplate handwriting which, unfortunately, though perfectly legible in the original, is too small for reproduction. It was complete with only a blank left for the insertion of the date of his death.

Perhaps the most remarkable feature is that it was written at the age of 78, four years ago. It may be presumed that he was just as meticulous in business and it is no surprise that the firm he helped to found before the turn of the century still flourishes."
